And we would use it as distinctively as any other writing tool. And it became part of both of our writing styles. The first songs we wrote, the earliest days, we knew there was power in silence. When John and I first got together, we were thinking conceptually about the music, things like that. A momentary silence speaks as much as extreme loudness. And there’s this pause - it’s so short, but noticeable - before the “She’ll only come out at night…” in “Maneater.” There’s an energy that gets set loose with that pause.Ī: It’s funny, few people have actually addressed that. But I think a lot about how much silence enhances music. Q: I hope this isn’t a total shot in the dark. But it’s not fair to the artist and it’s not indicative of what is going on with their process. It’s what people do: It’s easier to talk about it when you do that. Certainly music, but maybe any other art form. You come across as having been disinclined to find easy categorization.Ī: Correct. Q: Hall & Oates worked during a time with a lot of different styles and sub-genres: there was ‘70s Philly soul, disco, new wave and these other permutations of pop/rock and R&B. I like the format of the album because as an artist it allows for more complete thoughts about a point in time, or an emotional statement. I don’t feel anything stronger about the hits. The rest could be equally good, but they become deep cuts. But you make an album, say 12 songs, and if you’re lucky you get maybe two or three hits out of them that the masses hear. But deep down I think people really love singles.Ī: Yeah, the irony of it all - actually “irony” isn’t the right word. Q: You viewed yourselves as an album band. So we try to be flexible within those songs and the arrangements, to bring new life into them and make them stay interesting for everybody including ourselves. What it comes down to with the shows with John, there are obligatory songs we gotta do. Is it difficult to figure out what to play? Each of you has a body of work outside the duo. Q: Could you tell us about putting together a Hall & Oates setlist? There are seventy-some songs on the box set from years ago. But the following Q&A with Hall was salvaged from the freezer, where it has been Zip-locked for three years, though his commentary about the band’s history felt void of freezer burn. For those wanting Hall’s take on the pandemic, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
And honestly, the band’s 29 Top 40 pop singles are more than enough to carry a setlist. There’s no new album to plug, but since the last time Hall & Oates released an album the duo was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This weekend, though, brings Daryl Hall and John Oates to town with Squeeze opening.
A year and a half later, a well, here we are.Ī new tour with new dates was set for last year, but a global pandemic kicked the can down the road again.
